COFFEE PLANTS IN THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY

WE wonder if coffee plants would thrive in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas.

The area is sub-tropical. Summers are usually 3 digit affairs. Autumns are hot. Winters are minor cool bits. Springs are short and sweet because heat comes in.
They are also quite windy.

Dad was in Eagle River, Wisconsin in the late 1940s.  He loved it there. Dad said the people were decent and kind.

I remember him talking about the place when I was a child.

In adulthood I have spoken to people from Wisconsin. All I hear is good things about Eagle River.

They say the fishing is great.

WE wrote letters to penpals from different parts of the world back in the 1980s.

It took patience waiting for a response from OUR international penpals.

It was exciting to find the sometimes colorful envelopes. The paper on which some letters were written was sometimes flimsy.

WE are too high tech now.

The art of letter writing is still alive.

WE will try to check out garage sales this year.  Usually WE notice signs around the neighborhood and in the city.

It is a cool Thursday on the Dublin Ranch in Mission, Texas.

Greer was a country boy from West Virginia. I met him at Fort Lee, Virginia when I was in the Army Reserve.

WE were both there for Supply school training.  I do not remember if he was Regular Army, Army Reserve or National Guard.

He was a good friend.

I am just walking down nostalgic roads now and then.

Hopefully Greer is healthy , successful and happy.

WE remember the old CBS classic hit television show that aired on Thursday nights.

It chronicled the story of John Boy Walton and his family in a small Virginia mountain community. John Boy is a young man who aspires to become a writer.

His character narrates the stories.

The writing for this program was excellent.

No need for car chases or violence.

BRAVO COMPANY DAYS AT FORT LEE, VIRGINIA

I was in Fort Lee, Virginia in 1983 when I was in the Army Reserve. I was there for Subsistence Supply training.  I was to become a supply clerk. That was my military job aka MOS.  All the tests were open book.

Most troops went to school from 8 a.m.  to Noon. The rest of the day the soldiers were off.

Bravo Company was not off until 8:00 pm.  10:00 pm was when WE hit the sack.

I was a member of Bravo Company. WE were hardcore. That is something I discovered.  WE went to school from 8:00 a.m. till Noon. WE would have lunch.

WE did drill and ceremony for 2 hours or so. WE focused on DNC.

After DNC WE had physical training.

WE were told Bravo Company was the post commander's first command.  He wanted Bravo to always win the post DNC competition.

That year WE won.
